Tradução do making of da animação 3d para o GP Cingapura de F1 – Parte 3

Chegamos à parte final da tradução do making of publicado no site da Maxon sobre a animação 3d feita para a Red Bull apresentando o novo circuito de Cingapura para a Fórmula 1. A animação foi feita pela produtora Peter Clausen Film & TV e o estúdio de animação AixSponza Animation and VFX, ambos de Munique, Alemanha.

Uma grande preocupação deste projeto era o rendering. Vários efeitos diferentes tiveram de ser manipulados pelo sistema de render. Para começar, haviam muitos objetos 3d com malha altamente densa por causa das imensas cenas e dos arquivos CAD envolvidos. Como o estilo visual é baseado em reflexões, o sistema de render teve de manipular uma quantidade muito grande de efeitos raytracing de iluminação. A iluminação global foi usada em toda a animação para atingir o melhor resultado de iluminação possível. Por último, mas não menos importante, o visual noturno da cidade exigiu um número grande de efeitos volumétricos de iluminação.

“Felizmente o CINEMA 4D permite uma grande liberdade quando a preocupação é o sistema de render,” afirmou Manuel Casasola Merkle. “Em acréscimo ao rápido e estável módulo de Render Avançado existem muitas soluções de terceiros disponíveis. O principal é que há o Vray, um dos sistemas mais capazes no uso de efeito raytrace. E o melhor é que esses dois se complementam. O Vray é capaz de fazer uma Iluminação Global animada muito boa e confiável, além de produzir resultados altamente realistas devido ao seu avançado sistema BRDF de materiais e em pouco espaço de tempo. O módulo de Render Avançado, por outro lado, pode fazer efeitos de iluminação volumétrica e Ambient Occlusion muito bons e de forma rápida.”

Logo após o processo de avaliação começar ficou óbvio que o melhor meio de renderizar nosso projeto era uma combinação de Vray e Render Avançado. O Vray manipula grandes quantidades de efeito raytracing sem falhas e com seu modo de cache para luz, implementa um sistema muito estável e versátil de iluminação global. O Render Avançado, por outro lado, permite grandes renderings com efeito de iluminação volumétrica e um rápido ambient occlusion. Usar ambos de forma complementar não foi um problema por causa da excelente integração entre o Vray e o CINEMA 4D. Como foram usadas versões 64 bits de ambos pacotes de softwares, mesmo as maiores quantidades de polígonos não foram um problema real, devido a todos os nódulos de render terem memória RAM suficiente. Para renderizar o motion blur (desfoque de movimento) nas rodas um plug-in baseado no Render Avançado foi utilizado.

Para simplificar o processo de geração da iluminação global, as tomadas foram previamente divididas em Passos Múltiplos. O cenário foi renderizado em Vray usando uma luz calculada e guardada no cache. Este foi apenas um passo de iluminação global que precisou ser renderizado e pôde então ser distribuído para a render farm. O trajeto e o carro tiveram de ser renderizados usando um método de iluminação global capaz de trabalhar com objetos em movimento.

Na maioria das tomadas, renderizá-los diretamente com uma luz suave e gravada no cache, gerada para cada quadro da animação, funcionou bem. Como essa luz suave resultou na falta de detalhes nas sombras, foram usados passos de ambient occlusion do Render Avançado para trazer de volta esses detalhes na composição final. Em algumas situações difíceis para o cálculo de luz vindo de trás esse método não funcionou, uma vez que falhas na iluminação global eram visíveis. Aqui nós usamos o modo força brutal do Vray em combinação com a luz em cache, como um sistema secundário de cálculo. Isto resultou em tempos de render maiores, mas que geraram consistentemente os resultados necessários.

Todas as camadas de render foram finalmente combinadas usando o Adobe After Effects. A possibilidade de facilmente importar do 3d as posições de câmeras e objetos diretamente para o CINEMA 4D ajudaram bastante. Desta forma os retoque finais de efeitos de lentes, volumetria e texturas foram facilmente realizados. O desfoque de movimento foi feito em After Effects, também usando os passos de vetores de movimento do Render Avançado.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune.
