Tradução do making of da animação 3d para o GP Cingapura de F1 – Parte 1

Pois bem, antes de alguém jogar a primeira pedra devemos esclarecer o porquê do post, sabendo que que a animação 3d para o GP Cingapura de Fórmula 1 foi lançado em setembro do ano passado. É interessante esse tipo de publicação e muito instrutivo para quem curte Fórmula 1, para quem curte animação 3d e principalmente para quem trabalha ou está iniciando nesta área tão fascinante.

Colocado isso, passemos à tradução que fizemos sobre o making of postado no site da Maxon, desenvolvedora do software Cinema 4D, que foi empregado no projeto. Como o texto é longo, ele foi divido em três partes para serem postados aqui. Espero que tenham ânimo para lê-lo todo =D.

O Grande Prêmio Cingapura de Fórmula 1 ocorreu em 28 de setembro de 2008 em um circuito de rua na cidade de Cingapura.

A Red Bull contratou a Peter Clausen Film & TV (Munique, Alemanha) para criar o vídeo-clipe mostrando o trajeto, exibindo todas as informações relevantes sobre o circuito e uma prévia da primeira corrida noturna realizada na história da Fórmula 1 – e a primeira em circuito de rua na Ásia. A idéia básica era deixar os pilotos da F1 Sebastian Vettel (Scuderia Toro Rosso) e Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) realizarem uma corrida mano-a-mano cheia de ação no novo circuito da cidade.

Peter Clausen Film & TV escolheu AixSponza Animation and VFX (Munique, Alemanha) como parceiros na produção deste filme, o qual foi feito todo em 3D.

Devido à construção do circuito real não estar completo, fazer o vídeo por meio de filmagem não era uma opção. Sobre tudo, fazer um filme gerado em computador (animação 3d) tornou possível usar novas e impossíveis ângulos de câmera, e criar um estilo visual distinto e extraordinário. O conceito envolvia empregar um carro de corrida 3d foto realista correndo em um ambiente estilizado. Desta forma, o conceito do filme foi trazido ao público sem perder a sensação da corrida que é vital para a Fórmula 1. A AixSponza desenvolveu um mundo com visual metálico estilizado que é facilmente reconhecível e abstrato ao mesmo tempo.

Após a conclusão do layout, dois meses foram gastos para completar o projeto inteiro. Um time de nove artistas 3D e de composição trabalharam tempo integral no projeto, que foi todo realizado em workstations Apple 8-core Xeon usando CINEMA 4D, Vray, After Effects e Nuke.

“A criação de cerca de 2 minutos e meio de um filme gerado em computador em alta resolução no prazo de dois meses representou um desafio para nós. Especialmente a necessidade de imagens foto realistas do carro e a imensa quantidade de reflexões borradas no mundo de metal foi trabalhoso”, diz Manuel Casasola Merkle, diretor criativo e administrativo da AixSponza. “Nós tivemos que pensar cuidadosamente sobre nossas ferramentas de software. Nossa decisão de usar o CINEMA 4D e Vray foi a mais acertada.”

Antes de tudo, o RB4, carro da Red Bull Racing, teve de ser importado para o CINEMA 4D. Felizmente a Red Bull forneceu os arquivos CAD originais do carro. Este foi convertido para polígonos usando o software McNeel Rhinoceros em diferentes resoluções (e para tal, algumas partes perdidas foram remodeladas usando NURBS): Um modelo em baixa resolução para tomadas distantes, um modelo em resolução média e um altamente detalhado para close-ups.

Estes modelos foram importados para o CINEMA 4D via formato Wavefront .obj, que permitiu que as informações das normais do NURBS fossem mantidas e garantissem uma malha sem falhas. A malha foi então manipulada usando algumas expressões complexas Xpresso para conseguir um tipo de arquivo do carro digital que pudesse ser usado por diferentes artistas em momentos diferentes do projeto. Devido à tecnologia Xref do CINEMA 4D foi possível alternar entre as resoluções para tarefas diferentes (animação, configuração da cena, rendering final, etc.) e tipos de tomadas sem ter de trocar o carro manualmente.
