Saiba como nasceu o protagonista da série de animação 3d Pocoyo

David Cantolla, um dos criadores do personagem, escreveu um post no blog oficial da série, Pocoyo Blog, um pouco sobre como o pequeno protagonista dessa série de animação 3d foi criado.

Antes de começar a definir o visual do personagem, chamado inicialmente apenas por “O Garoto”, a equipe do estúdio espanhol Zinkia se preocupou em definir as características da personalidade. A idéia principal era criar um garoto que tivesse os traços psicológicos de um garoto real, que ficasse triste, com raiva, que risse, fosse curioso e imprevisível. Também teria de ser sensível, rude, teria que quebrar coisas e ser independente.

Os primeiros esboços mostram um Pocoyo sensivelmente diferente do traço final, considerando que a alteração de pequenos detalhes em um personagem de traços limpos fazem muita diferença. Duas características importantes destes primeiros esboços são a presença de cabelo e sobrancelha.

No esboço seguinte vemos algumas mudanças e outras características, como a panela na cabeça (inspiração no Menino Maluquinho?) e a chupeta, que serviria para o personagem se comunicar apenas por expressões dos olhos e fazê-lo se parecer mais com as crianças reais.

Abaixo é apresentada o primeiro modelo 3d de teste do Pocoyo, feito no software Lightwave, posteriormente trocado pelo Softimage XSI.

Após a criação de um piloto para conseguir parcerias para animação, o estúdio fechou acordo com a Granada International, do Reino Unido. Voltando ao trabalho de criação dos personagens, algumas novas mudanças foram feitas em Pocoyo. A cabeça foi remodelada e a panela trocada por um gorro, que inicialmente deixava à mostra a nuca do personagem, mas que foi coberta pois a aparência no modelo 3d não agradava.

Devido à problemas em algumas posições, o capuz foi removido, bem como o bolso do abrigo. Para melhorar a mobilidade de Pocoyo, a cabeça foi posicionada mais para trás, e o corpo levemente inclinado. Isso ajudou a solucionar o problema de os objetos baterem na cabeça do personagem quando ele os segurava.

David Cantolla esclarece também um mal-entendido durante a criação de Pocoyo. Após seis meses de trabalho na criação do personagem foi decidida a exclusão da chupeta e ocorreu a divulgação errônea de que o estúdio era contra esta decisão.

David explica que a idéia da chupeta era fazer o personagem se parecer mais com uma criança real e que na Espanha, o uso da chupeta pelas crianças era considerado normal do ponto de vista educacional, diferente de muitos outros países. Pelo lado da produção, apesar de a equipe não ter planejado o uso de vozes ou sincronização labial para os personagens da série, não haveria problema em fazê-los. Na verdade, a exclusão da chupeta até poderia ajudar a vender a animação 3d para outros países onde o uso da chupeta não é recomendado.

A falta da chupeta acabou causando um problema na diminuição do colorido do personagem, algo posteriormente solucionado com a inclusão de um fecho de zíper na roupa de Pocoyo. Por fim, David afirma que o personagem com a chupeta não se parece com Pocoyo e reconhece que a inclusão da voz foi acertada.
