Sediada em Emeryville, na Califórnia, a Pixar Animation Studios ganhou este nome após ser comprada por Steve Jobs, co-fundador da Apple, por 10 milhões de dólares. A companhia nasceu como uma divisão da Lucasfilm, empresa de George Lucas, em 1979 e se chamava Graphics Group. Essa divisão era responsável pelo desenvolvimento de softwares de computação gráfica.

Em 2006 a Pixar foi comprada pela Disney por 7 milhões de dólares, fazendo de Steve Jobs o maior acionista individual da Disney com 7% de suas ações.
